The Moment that Changed Everything
Dropping our toxic stories brings new life
There was one moment that truly changed everything for me.
While the realization that my old beliefs had to die in order for real faith to come alive in me was huge, it wasn’t enough by itself to get me all the way home.
That required another level of awakening—one that came when I began questioning not just my stories about God, but also my stories about the world and about myself.
For years, I had struggled—especially around the holidays—with loneliness and depression. Another year gone by, and my life still didn’t look the way I’d hoped.
One year, all of that came to a breaking point. I couldn’t stop thinking that my whole life had been one long story of rejection—in love, in work, in everything that mattered.
And so, in my pain, I decided to prove it.
I opened a Word document and created a table where I listed every major moment of rejection I could remember—from childhood through adulthood. I wanted to see it all in black and white. A friend tells me this is called a “pain purge.”
And when I finished, I read through it—and then something cracked open.
I said out loud,
“I am so tired of this story.”
That was the turning point.
I was tired of the story I was telling about my worth.
Tired of the story I was telling about the world and how it “never supported me.”
And most of all, I was tired of the story I had believed for so long about God.
That single sentence—“I’m so tired of this story”—cracked open a doorway to grace.
It was the moment I began to awaken to a new way of seeing, to move fully into my life, into my body, into love.
Recognizing that the stories we have inherited and tell ourselves are causing us pain, and being willing to question those stories, is the real turning point that allows us to come home to our own sacredness, to our own lives.
If you’d like to explore discovering your own sacred life more deeply with me, I invite you to join me for “Your Sacred Life: Come Home to Purpose, Passion, and Joy,” a five-week guided journey to help you reimagine the Sacred – and yourself.
